Where Do (Most) Birds Go In The Winter?

September 10th at 6:00 pm

The Great Hollow Nature Preserve and the Sherman Library will be hosting Where Do (Most) Birds Go In the Winter? presented by Dr. Sarah Deckel on Wednesday, September 10th at 6:00pm at the Library.

With summer coming to a close, the wildlife around us can sense the change in seasons—especially birds. These small but mighty creatures prepare for the winter by taking off from their breeding grounds and migrating south, sometimes as far as 7,000 miles! The biggest question among biologists is: what are the benefits of enduring this journey, and why do birds do it? Join Dr. Sarah Deckel of Great Hollow Nature Preserve for a presentation on where birds go during the winter, and what some of the challenges and benefits are to this long distance journey.

Dr. Sarah Deckel earned her PhD in Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst before coming on as a research fellow with Great Hollow Nature Preserve. Her dissertation focused on breeding biology of Swainson's Thrushes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and she continues to work with montane breeding birds at Great Hollow. Prior to going to graduate school, Sarah worked on several migration projects, including the Apalachicola Bay in Florida and the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts.

This program is free and is offered in person at the Sherman Library. Register online at shermanlibrary.org/registration-dropdown or contact slprograms@biblio.org.
