Who would have thought that a serene 31-acre man-made lake in Sherman could hold such a rich tapestry of history and intrigue? Imagine a time almost before automobiles, when adventurous souls from Brooklyn discovered the quaint farming community of Sherman. Inspired by the beauty of the landscape, a visionary group of people banded together in 1906, pooling their resources to construct a dam, and thus, Lake Mauweehoo was born. Come and hear the stories that weave together the dreams and determination of those early romantics, and experience the magic of Lake Mauweehoo through their eyes.
John Cilio and Ann Price, whose grandfather was one of the visionaries from Brooklyn, have gathered stories, vintage photographs, newspaper clippings, and original correspondence documenting the lake's evolution. Ann Price remarked, “While floating on the lake and enjoying its ever-changing ambiance, I often think of its founders, some of whom I knew as a child. These six visionary individuals created a magical environment that is now cherished by so many.” John Cilio added, “The combination of so many wonderful different family collections in one book has allowed us to recreate some of the intrigue and joy experienced at the lake throughout its history.”
